Curovate: A Tool for Remote Physiotherapy for Post Knee or Hip Surgery

Tools for remote health care have seen a significant increase in their use over the past year. They are powerful tools to facilitate quality healthcare, and at times are essential for northern and rural settings. In this issue we share an emerging technology and hear directly from Curovate’s CEO Nirtal Shah about their comprehensive rehabilitation mobile application that helps with remote support of physiotherapy post knee or hip surgery.

The problem Curovate addresses.

Our vision at Curovate is to make physiotherapy accessible by everyone who needs it globally. Curovate will accomplish this goal by tackling the issue of low adherence to critical rehabilitation prior to and after major orthopaedic surgery. After surgery 80% of people do not do their necessary physio-therapy to fully recover. The result is that people who have major surgeries are not able to return to the activities that they love and have pain and limitations in their daily lives. This results in long term health consequences which worsens a person’s quality of life and also costs the individual and the health care system more time and money. All of this is avoidable with the appropriate rehabilitation prior to and after surgery.

How Curovate came to be.

Curovate was started by a physiotherapist, Nirtal Shah, with over 20 years of clinical experience. Throughout his career Nirtal witnessed the consequence of poor access to physiotherapy. This is why he has used his experience in physiotherapy and public health with the opportunities that mobile health provides to improve access to physiotherapy for everyone who needs it. Nirtal had a keen interest in improving access right here in Canada as well as globally to enhance the lives of people by providing them with critical physiotherapy before and after surgery.

Our mobile app currently provides six to eight months of rehabilitation for adults following a total knee replacement, a total hip replacement and an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) recon-struction.
